Study structure

Basic studies

Studies start with basic studies, which aim at giving students basic information on the infrastructure of society and the economic operations of enterprises and giving professional basic skills in languages and information systems. The studies will also acquaint students with virtual learning environments.

The basic studies are the same to all students in each degree programme.

Professional studies

The aim of professional studies in the Degree Programme in Business Information Technology is to acquaint students to the central problem areas, applications and their scientific fundaments in software industry in such a way that they can after graduation work independently in specialist tasks and as an entrepreneur and can participate in the development of the work community.

Elective studies

The aim of elective studies is to offer students a chance to choose personally interesting courses, which either deepen or widen their professional know-how. Deepening means that students get deeply acquainted with the sector of software industry they have chosen and know it so well that they can work as specialists of it in the working life. Widening means that students widen their know-how to a new sector, the central contents of which they will learn and in which are they can adapt their expertise of software industry. E.g. common, multidisciplinary university studies of applied sciences are these kind of studies.

The elective studies in the Degree Programme in Business Information Technology consist of training, which deepens the professional skills and the research and development in practise, courses of the use and management of computers, courses concerning implementation of information systems in out of line programming languages or in out of line programming environments, courses concerning the knowledge of information systems and hardware management, courses conducive business thinking and courses of adult education.

Training

Bachelor’s degree includes a practical training conducive to professional skills. The general aim of the practical training is to make students apply and evaluate the knowledge and skills they have acquired during studies in the line-specifically central work tasks in practice in a controlled way. The extent of the practical training is 30 credit units.

The students will have to have appr. 90 credit units of studies performed before taking the supervised training. In the number of credit units demanded the unsupervised training performed before the start of studies will not be taken into account. The training is usually carried out during the third academic year of the studies either in Finland or abroad.

Bachelor’s thesis

The aim of a Bachelor’s thesis is to develop and display the preparedness of students to apply their knowledge and skills in a practical expert task connected with professional studies. The extent of the Bachelor’s thesis is 15 credit units. It will be prepared from a subject related to the main subjects and the working life. Students can preliminary discuss the theme already during their practical training; the University gets assignments from the working life and the projects of the R&D Department of the school also offer interesting themes for a Bachelor’s thesis.

The students will be able to start preparing their Bachelor’s theses after performing adequately studies in several subjects and completing their practical training, altogether appr. 150 credit units. They have to have a sufficient knowledge of and skills in research methodology and project work.

The progress of the work from a theme initiative to a complete Bachelor’s thesis is described in detail in the Instructions for preparing a Bachelor’s thesis; students will have a right to get instruction in different stages of the work. A Bachelor’s thesis can be written either in Finnish, Swedish or English or in some other language related to the curriculum of the degree programme when agreed upon. For graduation students will also have to prepare a maturity test in the field of their Bachelor’s thesis.

A Bachelor’s thesis will be assessed by the instructor(s) and the committant on a scale from 1 - 5. The final assessment will be done by the Research Group of the department. The assessment grounds are given in the Instructions for preparing a Bachelor’s thesis.
