In this way, they can either deepen or widen their professional competences. Deepening means getting deeply acquainted with the area of software industry chosen to be able to work as a specialist within it in the working life. Widening means learning the core competences from different areas, which allows for more flexibility and adaptability in rapidly changing software industry.
The overall goal of the practical training is to give an opportunity to students to apply and to evaluate the knowledge and the skills they have acquired during studies. The practical training is tightly connected to real-life working meaning that students do real tasks in the companies. The duration of the practical training period is 30 ects. Students need to have approximately 90 ects completed before starting their supervised practical training. It is usually implemented during the third academic year of studies either in Finland or abroad.
The aim of a Bachelor’s thesis is to demonstrate the readiness of students to apply their competencies to a practical professional task connected with their studies. The extent of the Bachelor’s thesis is 15 ects. The topic of the Bachelor’s thesis should be relevant to the major subject of studies. Students are advised to think about their thesis topic already during their practical training. The university can also offer thesis’ topics based on assignments from the companies and the projects within the R&D department of the school.
Student is able to start preparing the Bachelor’s thesis after having a sufficient number of credits registered in his/her record of credits (120 ects), the practical training completed and a good command of methods and tools to accomplish the work (e.g. studies in research activities, project work and scientific writing). The Bachelor’s thesis process is described in details in the instructions for preparing a Bachelor’s thesis. Students have a possibility to get guidance from their supervisor(s) at different stages of the work. The thesis can be written either in Finnish, Swedish or English or in some other language related to the curriculum of the degree programme when agreed upon. Students will also have to make a maturity test related to their Bachelor’s thesis.
Bachelor’s theses are assessed by three teachers: the supervisor, another teacher who has expert knowledge of the subject matter and a language teacher. The client will also be asked for an evaluation, if the thesis has been implemented as an assignment. Furthermore, students will make a self-evaluation report concerning their own work which is also taken into account. The overall grade will be assessed on a scale of grades 0–5.
